What Is a Good Originality Score?

Updated

What is a good originality score? It depends on what you wrote. On this site the plagiarism checker reports an originality score, which is 100 minus the plagiarism score, and lists each matching web source with its own match percentage. A research essay full of properly cited quotes can score lower than a personal reflection and still be completely honest.

Limitations: Matches show overlap with web sources, not intent; correctly cited quotes count as overlap too. How results can be wrong →

What Is a Good Originality Score in Practice?

  • Plagiarism score under 15%: labelled no overlap found (originality above 85%).
  • 15% to 39%: labelled partial overlap: worth checking which sources matched.
  • 40% and above: labelled overlap detected: review every listed source.
  • Context: quotes, citations, common phrases and set terminology all count as matches.

Why Honest Work Can Score Lower

The checker compares text with web sources; it doesn't know whether a matching passage is a quotation you cited correctly. Direct quotes, definitions, legal or technical boilerplate and lists of references all raise the plagiarism score.

Short common phrases can match many pages too. That's why the list of sources matters more than the headline number: look at what matched and why.

Reading the Source List

Each source shows a URL and a match percentage. A single source with a high percentage usually means a long passage came from one place; many sources with small percentages usually mean common phrases or a topic many sites cover.

The checker doesn't map each sentence to its source, so open the sources with the highest percentages and compare them with your text.

Schools and Publishers Set Their Own Bar

There is no universal pass mark. Teachers, journals and clients set their own expectations, and many look at the matched passages rather than a percentage. Ask what they use before you worry about a number.

Improving a Low Originality Score Honestly

Start with the sources that matched most. If a passage is a quote, make sure it is in quotation marks and cited. If it is a paraphrase that stays too close to the original, rewrite it in your own structure and cite it. If it is a common phrase, it may be fine to leave.

Don't try to lower the number by swapping synonyms; that keeps the copied structure and is still plagiarism.
