Amazon KDP AI Content Rules for Authors

Updated

Amazon KDP AI content rules separate two things: AI-generated content, which authors must disclose, and AI-assisted content, which they don't need to. If you self-publish on Kindle Direct Publishing and used AI anywhere in your book, here is what the guidelines say, in their own words, and how to review your manuscript before you publish.

Limitations: Every result is a probability that can be wrong, not proof of how something was written. How results can be wrong →

What the Amazon KDP AI Content Rules Say

  • AI-generated: KDP defines it as text, images or translations created by an AI-based tool, and that still applies if you edit it substantially afterwards.
  • Disclosure: KDP says: "We require you to inform us of AI-generated content."
  • AI-assisted: content you created yourself and used AI tools to edit, refine, error-check or otherwise improve, or to brainstorm ideas.
  • No disclosure needed: KDP says: "You are not required to disclose AI-assisted content."

Disclosure is made when you publish a new title or edit and republish an existing one. Read the full guideline on KDP before publishing, since it can change.

Working Out Which Applies to Your Book

If an AI tool wrote passages, chapters, illustrations or a translation that ended up in the book, that is AI-generated under KDP's definition, even if you rewrote it. If you wrote the book and used AI to suggest edits or ideas, that is AI-assisted.

Covers count too: an AI-generated cover image is AI-generated content.

Reviewing a Manuscript Before You Publish

If you've worked with ghostwriters, co-authors or editors, you may not know exactly how every chapter was produced. Running chapters through the AI text detector (up to 150,000 characters each) gives you a signal on passages to ask about before you fill in the disclosure.

A score can't decide the disclosure for you; it can be wrong in both directions. Ask the people involved how the text was produced, and keep their answers with your records.

Quality and Originality Still Matter

Disclosure doesn't replace the other content rules. Run the plagiarism checker on chapters you didn't write yourself, verify facts in any AI-assisted non-fiction, and make sure translated or generated text reads well for paying readers.
